Giving blood – Lao Red Cross

25 Jun , 2017

Recently I took a morning off work to catch up on a few errands. One of these was to make time to give blood at the Lao Friends Hospital Visitor Centre n Luang Prabang.

It was a simple process and everyone was very friendly. I had a finger pricked and tests were taken and a blood pressure reading. Then the needle went in and a lay there resting for 15 mins which I gave 350 mls.

There are on average, 25 or more serious life threatening road traffic accidents weekly in Vientiane alone. One person’s donation can save up to three people’s lives. The Lao National Blood Service is in need of more blood. Here is some information from them.

WHY SHOULD YOU DONATE BLOOD?
60,000 donations are needed in Lao each year, but only 30,000 donations are made.
Blood donations are needed by patients with thalassemia, anaemia, kidney failure, haemorrhage, operation, dengue fever and accident victims.
Please consider becoming a blood donor today, to make sure there is a safe and sufficient supply for those in need.

WHO CAN DONATE BLOOD?
Most people are eligible to donate blood if they;
• are fit, healthy and not suffering from a cold, flu or other illness at the time of donation
• had a minimum of six hours sleep the previous evening
• are aged between 17-60 years
• weigh more than 45kg
• eaten something in the hours before donating
