A Happy Life – a story by a Lao teacher

27 Oct , 2017

Chanh is an inspiring teacher at LEOT school where I volunteer. Here is his story of finding the opportunities LEOT brings.

My given name is Bounchanh Sengdala, but Chanh for short. I was born in a poor family from a remote area. Fortunately, my family gave me a great opportunity to pursue my dream in order to have a better life in the future. So, I was separated from my family for 5 years while I was at University in Luang Prabang.

With support from siblings, parents and friends, I always concentrated on my studies and majored in an English pedagogy. Later on, I accomplished my studies at University. I was pleased with my qualification. However, I struggled to find a job. Fortunately, I found the best place. It was called “LEOT”. Here, I learned so many things.

To me, being a teacher is the most important priority in society because I give education to the uneducated, young and disadvantaged people. It’s like “Give and help never end”. So, I’m very proud of being a teacher or a giver. I truly believe that young seeds now will be blooming beautifully in the future and become the greatest national defence to stand by themselves throughout their lives.

The period of time I’ve been teaching at LEOT, has been a fabulous opportunity for me to see young students who are keen to learn and take lessons in English and computing. To me, students are like a part of my learning and become my friends. As Joseph Joubert says “To teach is to learn twice over” I always try to teach with much enthusiasm, especially when students feel exhausted. “The best teachers teach from the heart, not from the book” says Mrs. Ardiff.

At LEOT I am also the Dream Catcher Program assistant. This program teaches me endless things, including how to be a great leader, consultant and communicator. As well, it teaches young students to discover and to think what kind of people they are and what kind of jobs they would be interested in doing in the future.
